Deccan Chargers crush Royal Challengers

Cape Town, April 22 (IANS) Rohit Sharma and Adam Gilchrist hit ferocious knocks as Deccan Chargers beat Bangalore Royal Challengers by 24 runs in an Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 match here Wednesday.

Electing to bat, Gilchrist (71 off 45 balls) and Sharma (52 off 30 balls) powered Deccan Chargers to 184 for six, the highest total in the tournament so far.

Bangalore Royal Challengers recovered from a disatrous start through Rahul Dravid (48) and Virat Kohli (50) but were restricted to 160/8. Scott Styris took three wickets.

Deccan Chargers, the bottom placed team in the inaugural IPL, continued their redemption journey by recording their second straight comprehensive victory.

Royal Challengers slumped to their second consecutive defeat, having started the tournament with a sensational 75-run win over defending champions Rajasthan Royals.

Gichrist and Sharma brought the crowd to their feet, smashing five sixes each. Altogether, 16 sixes were hit in the match, 12 coming from Chargers' batsmen that included three by Sharma in one Anil Kumble over.

Fast bowler Fidel Edwards gave a perfect start to the Chargers' defence of the formidable total, knocking down opener Jesee Ryder's stumps with an express yorker with his first ball.

Jacques Kallis and Robin Uthappa did not last long as Chargers slumped to 38 for three.

Skipper Kevin Pietersen and Rahul Dravid tried to stem the rot, but Pietersen was decieved by left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha as he danced down the track only to be stumped.

Dravid, who has been the Chargers's best batsmen, played another brilliant knock, stroking five fours and two sixes in 27 balls. But pressure finally got the better of him as he holed out to Venugopal Rao. Kohli gave his best but could not see the team through.

Earlier, Chargers bore the fury of Gilchrist, having been at the receiving end of his former teammate Mathew Hayden's blazing knock Monday night.

Gilchrist's explosive ininngs formed the base for the big total. The Royal Challengers were firmly on the backfoot as Gilchrist dealt in fours and sixes.

The retiered Australian batsman cleared Praveen Kumar for three sixes in the first over and then tonked fast bowler Dale Steyn for two fours and a six in the next over.

Praveen managed well to get rid of Herschelle Gibbs (13) after being smashed for a six. V.V.S Laxman did not stay at the crease for long.

Rohit Sharma rotated the strike, allowing in-form Gilchrist to take charge. He cut loose in an audacious manner, taking on the expereinced Kumble, who had taken five wickets against Rajasthan Royals, for three huge sixes.

They added 61 off 36 balls before Gilchrist was dismissed by Pietersen. Sharma kept the scoreboard moving with some sweetly timed boundaries

Ishant शर्मा Profile

Profile

Over the years, India have always lacked a tall fast bowler. Not anymore as Ishant Sharma, 6’4" and a right-arm medium pacer, emerged on the scene with the potential to hit it big at the international stage. His armoury consists of sharp and deceptive bouncers which batsmen struggle to fend. Sharma shot to fame during the 2007-08 Test series in Australia. His rhythmic, high-arm action permitted him to bowl at around 135-140 kph. For someone who started playing serious cricket at 14, his rise has been rapid and he made his Ranji Trophy debut at 18. An injury to Munaf Patel presented him an opportunity during India's tour of Bangladesh in May 2007 but it was in Australia where he really shone. Steve Waugh went on to call him the next best thing that happened to Indian cricket. He illustrated he could move the ball both ways and his famous spell in the second innings at Perth, where he set up Ricky Ponting, was the talk of the series. Ishant constantly impressed in the one-day series, ending as India's highest wicket-taker in the triumphant campaign. He will be a speedster to watch out for in the future.

Undisputedly India’s most successful captain ever, Sourav Ganguly has seen many ups and downs in his international career. The ‘Prince of Kolkata’ will be always best remembered for his tremendous comeback to international cricket after being axed from captaincy and the squad. He is one of India’s most successful ODI players. During his captaincy stint, he forged a winning unit from a bunch of talented individuals which took India to the 2003 World Cup finals. Many felt he could not play the bouncer while there were others who felt that he was the God of the off-side. Ganguly’s fitness was another reason why he was always under fire. Barring all the stated reasons, it cannot be denied that he will be one of the greatest players of one-day cricket. He can hammer the seamers as effortlessly as he plays the spinners. Popularly known as ‘Dada’, Ganguly can be rightly counted as one of the greats of Indian cricket.

अनिल कुंबले profile

Profile

Anil "Jumbo" Kumble represents the terms hard trier, match-winner, and a fighter. Being India's most effective bowler in both Test and ODI matches, Kumble has spearheaded the Indian bowling attack for more than a decade now. He is an out-and-out team man and one of the greatest spinners to have played the game. Kumble's phenomenal ability to stomach pain was proved in Antigua in 2002 when he bandaged his fractured jaw and returned to the field to deliver a stirring spell. In a spectacular yet downplayed career, he has claimed practically every Indian record. Kumble has never been a great turner of the ball but has always extracted enough from the surface to fox the batsmen. His googly, sidespin and subtle variations in flight are enough to cause trouble. In 1999, he became the second bowler ever to scalp ten wickets in a Test innings. The leg-spinner received the ultimate gift in the twilight of his career after he was named India's Test skipper in 2007.

Rahul Dravid Profile

Profile

India has always produced several great batting legends, and Rahul Dravid is a certainty in the top notches of that list. Despite making his debut almost six years after Tendulkar, he did not take time to catch up with the Master Blaster. By the time Dravid was in his early thirties, he was already in the big league alongside the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar and other batting greats. He is considered as one of the most technically sound batsmen of the modern era. A classical stroke player who effortlessly blends substance with style, it is a treat to watch him play those pulls and cover drives. Two traits that are associated most with Dravid are his sincerity and humility. As selfless as he is, he donned the keeping gloves for India when they struggled to find the right team combination. Saving Tests and winning them became second nature to Rahul. Unarguably India’s best overseas batsman, Dravid has been the backbone of the Indian batting for almost a decade now. He successfully led his nation to Test series victories in West Indies and England adding to his creditable performances in every country he has toured. ‘The Wall’ shockingly resigned from captaincy in 2007 after a successful England tour.
